I recently worked with a teacher who wanted her eighth-grade students to use artificial intelligence to explore a topic, conduct research, and develop a piece of writing. We started by looking at whether the original idea matched what we could reasonably expect from an eighth-grade student.
The overall concept was strong, but students were being asked to make several difficult decisions at once. They needed to choose a topic, connect it to another subject, develop a research question, evaluate AI responses, locate credible sources, organize evidence, and write a final product. Any one of those tasks could be challenging for a middle school student.
We scaled the project by breaking the research process into smaller stages. Students would begin with something they were already interested in, such as golf, gaming, music, fashion, or weather. They would then use AI to explore three possible connections between that interest and another field. A student interested in golf, for example, might investigate how golf ball design connects to engineering.
From there, the student would choose one connection and develop a focused research question. The AI could help narrow the question, suggest search terms, and identify ideas that needed to be verified. The student would still locate credible sources, select evidence, and decide what the research showed.
I kept coming back to a simple phrase while developing the activity: research, not rely.
Students can use AI to ask questions, explore connections, clarify unfamiliar ideas, and plan their next steps. They should not rely on it to provide their evidence, make their decisions, or write the final product. Every factual claim still needs to connect to a credible source the student actually opened and read.
A teacher-created Gemini Gem helps build those expectations directly into the student experience. The Gem is instructed to ask one question at a time, offer a limited number of choices, and guide students without completing the work. It will not write an introduction, thesis, body paragraph, conclusion, or full essay. Instead, it helps students think about what they know, what they assume, and what they still need to verify.
